Looking for something similar to .270 Winchester, 300 WSM, or anything along those lines. Broke college student, so something sub $350 would be ideal. Thanks for looking!

I think there's a used 7mm Rem Mag at M&B Sports, but let me check the price. (Warren sends out a monthly inventory sheet, if you contact him). Forget it, over $1000.
You will probably have to seek out a used Ruger or Savage, one of their basic models, but I'd think anything in a magnum caliber will be outside your price range.
.270 Winchester seems so unloved in New England, I suspect that would be your best bet. Walmart stocks .270 Winchester and it won't break the bank like the more obscure belted magnums and similar.

I hadn't seen anything in my price range. There was a very nice Mossberg 1500 but he was selling for $500 and I didn't want to lowball him too much.

Thanks! I figure I'll have to get something along those lines but wanted to see if I could get a good deal off this site. If nothing pops up soon though I'll definitely go that route

Check your PMs.
You might find a surplus Central/South American Mauser in 7mm, 7.65mm, .30-06, etc. somehere near that price range, but today it will be tough. There isn't really anything wrong with the 7x57mm (even the 6.5mm), 8x57mm or most .30 calibers (308 and .30-06), but they just don't have that "new car smell" like 6.5 CM, .338 LM or other current favorites.

Thank you! How are they in terms of accuracy? I'd love something I could hunt with out to 500 yards or so once I'm reliably able to hit that far. I'd seem some surplus but was under the impression they weren't that accurate. Thanks again!

Teddy Roosevelt might be able to tell you about the effectiveness of the 7mm Mauser. All of those rounds are capable to reach out, but not being a hunter, I can't say if 500 yard shots are very prudent for hunting, maybe prairie dogs or elk out west, but even then, I suspect those long shots aren't typical. I think you'll have to do some long range shooting on paper to see the capabilities of any rifle , new or ancient.

My 100+ Y.O. Swedish Mauser can probably hit consistently at 500 yards, but where do you get that range in CT. I'm sure the rifle can shoot better than me.

I do not know what you consider long range. But a 308 is good for 900 yards. You should be able to find something in that price range. Adding optics might blow the budget.

Thanks! Budget is definitely not including optics in the budget - thinking I may be able to get some from my dad. I'd be good with 308 if something comes along

Ruger American/ Mossberg Patriot/ Savage Axis in .308 is probably what you can expect to find in that budget. Those are hunting rifles, not "long range rifles", but with good quality ammo you should still be able to hit reasonably sized targets out to 500-600 yards.

Free shipping, no sales tax. Find a dealer that will do a $25 transfer and you are in it for less than $400. I have one. I find it to be of higher quality than the Ruger and the Savage.
