9 dead in mass shooting in Monterey Park, California
https://nypost.com/2023/01/22/monterey-park-mass-shooting-prompts-police-response-in-california/

At least 9 people were killed during a mass shooting in a city outside of Los Angeles Saturday night, according to police.

The shooting occurred in Monterey Park at 10:22 p.m. in California, around the area where the city hosted the first night of its annual Lunar New Year Celebration.

“Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Homicide detectives are responding to assist Monterey Park Police Department with a shooting death investigation,” LASD said in a statement.

The city, which is a predominately Asian community, is located roughly 8 miles away from downtown Los Angeles.

Officials identified the suspect as a male.

According to the Los Angeles Times, Seung Won Choi, who owns a restaurant across the street from where the shooting happened, said three people rushed into his business and told him to lock the door, claiming the shooter had a “machine gun with multiple rounds of ammunition.”

The festival draws more than 100,000 visitors each day including food vendors, entertainers, and merchants throughout the two-day celebration.

The Lunar New Year festival began Saturday morning and ended around 9 p.m. local time.

Potentially, a government is the most dangerous threat to man's rights: it holds a legal monopoly on the use of physical force against legally disarmed victims.

Apparently 10 dead, 10 wounded.
Of the 10 dead apparently (per the sheriff) 5 were women, and 5 men.
Preliminary suspect believed to be an male Asian.
It is being indicated by a sheriff that he doesn't believe an "assault" weapon was used.

Well, do'oh! Doesn't the sheriff realize that assault rifles are banned/illegal. Why would the shooter break the law and use an assault rifle?

Watch, there will be a slew of shootings with non-assault rifles Hmmm...let's ban bolt guns, lever guns, too. If there were excise taxes on bolt guns, lever guns, ammo, gun cases, gun safes, target paper....this shooting wouldn't have happened.

A gunman killed 10 people at a ballroom dance studio amid Lunar New Year celebrations and then probably tried — but failed — to target a second dance hall, authorities said Sunday.

An hours-long manhunt led police to surround and enter a white van, but it was not immediately clear whether the suspect was inside.

The shooting and manhunt sent a wave of fear through Asian American communities in the Los Angeles area and cast a shadow over Lunar New Year festivities around the country. Other cities sent extra officers to watch over the celebrations.

Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna said the shooting at the Star Ballroom Dance Studio in Monterey Park left five women and five men dead and wounded another 10 people. Then 20 to 30 minutes later, a man with a gun entered the Lai Lai Ballroom in nearby Alhambra.

Authorities believe the two events are connected. They offered no details about a possible motive.

The suspect in both cases was described as an Asian male. He entered the Alhambra club with a gun, and people wrested the weapon away from him before he fled, Luna said.

By midday, police in tactical vehicles and bomb-squad trucks surrounded a white van in a parking lot 22 miles (35.4 kilometers) from Alhambra in Torrance, another majority Asian community.

. Hours earlier, Luna said authorities were looking for a white van after witnesses reported seeing the suspect flee from Alhambra in such a vehicle.

“We believe there is a person inside of that vehicle. We don’t know their condition, but we’re going to handle that in safest manner that we possibly can and try and identify that person. Could it be our suspect? Possibly,” Luna said.

In response to a question, Luna said it was possible that the person barricaded in van is dead.

Members of a SWAT team entered the van a short time later and looked through its contents before walking away. It was unclear what they found.

Authorities said Sunday they know the suspect’s name but declined to release it because it could complicate their ability to apprehend him. But they did release a photo showing an Asian man wearing glasses and a winter hat. The image was taken from the attempted shooting in Alhambra.

The sheriff declined to say what type of gun was recovered in Alhambra. He said investigators believe the gun used in Monterey Park was not an assault rifle.

The news this morning said a witness said it was a long gun like a rifle. They also said it was an assault pistol, sounds convenient for the pistol brace ruling.

Police identify the deceased shooter as 72-year-old Huu Can Tran. Media running with the narrative of an "assault pistol" being used. Apparently a second handgun was found in the van.

Two more mass shootings in Cali. One on the set of a "music video" at a gas station. The other by apparently another elderly Asian.

7 Dead, 1 Injured in Half Moon Bay Mass Shooting; Suspect in Custody
https://www.nbcbayarea.com/news/local/peninsula/deadly-shootings-half-moon-bay/3137085/

Seven people were killed in a mass shooting that spanned two separate scenes in Half Moon Bay Monday afternoon, according to the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office.

Four victims with gunshot wounds were found dead at about 2:22 p.m. at a nursery along the 12700 block of San Mateo Road (Highway 92), the sheriff's office said. Another shooting victim was taken to Stanford Medical Center with life-threatening injuries.

Shortly after that discovery, three more shooting victims were found dead at another nursery along the 2100 block of Cabrillo Highway South, according to the sheriff's office.

Authorities identified the suspect as 67-year-old Half Moon Bay resident Chunli Zhao. He was taken into custody without incident at about 4:40 p.m. after he was found in his vehicle in the parking lot of the sheriff's office substation in Half Moon Bay, the sheriff's office said. A semi-automatic handgun was found in his car.

Zhao shot three of his victims in the trailers where they lived next to the field where they worked, and then gunned down two others in the field itself, officials said.

"They were farmworkers affected tonight. There were children on the scene of the incident. This is truly a heartbreaking incident in our community," said Supervisor Ray Mueller.

Authorities believe Zhao acted alone, San Mateo County Sheriff Christina Corpus said. A motive for the shooting spree wasn't immediately known.

The victims are believed to be workers on the properties, Corpus said. Half Moon Bay Councilmember Debbie Ruddock said the victims are Chinese farmworkers.

Shootout at Oakland gas station kills 1, wounds 8 people
https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2023/01/24/oakland-gas-station-shooting-kills/11110665002/

A shootout at an Oakland gas station killed one person and wounded seven others in the second shooting involving several people on Monday night in the San Francisco Bay Area, police said.

Officers were sent to the scene on Macarthur Boulevard just after 6 p.m. and learned there had been a shooting between several people, a police statement said.

The officers found shell casings at the Valero gas station but no victims. However, dispatchers learned several victims had taken themselves to local hospitals for treatment of gunshot wounds.

One person died at a hospital and the others were listed in stable condition, police said.

No arrests were made and other details were not immediately released.

At least 19 shots were fired, according to a photo of the shell casings that appeared in the East Bay Times.

The shootout took place only a few hours after a gunman killed seven people at two locations on the outskirts of Half Moon Bay. Officers arrested a suspect, 67-year-old Chunli Zhao, after they found him in his car in the parking lot of a sheriff’s substation, San Mateo County Sheriff Christina Corpus said.

Half Moon Bay is 24 miles (38 kilometers) southwest of Oakland and about 30 miles (48 kilometers) south of San Francisco.
