2019-nCov Virus
« on: January 24, 2020, 05:28:10 PM »
Good advice for when it gets bad.

Cover your face.
Wash your hands.
Stay away from hospitals (hell, stay away from crowds in-general).

2019-nCov mortality rate so far is about 3% (26 of 945 dead), but its real early.
MERS was 35% (554 of 1599 infected dead)
2002 SARS was 9.6% (778 dead).
1918 flu was 3-5% (40-50 million people dead total)
2009 H1N1 was 0.001–0.007% (203,000 dead)
Typical flu is 0.1% (650,000 dead/year in modern times)

Amazing picture of China building a 1,000 bed hospital specifically for this event in 10 days.

That map is not fully updated. As of this morning I heart from a little birdie that NYC had a few people under watch and at least 1 of them confirmed.

It’s as real-time as the person who runs the dashboard gets the data from the cited publishers, who also have lag in compiling lab results. There’s no other way to know actual lab-confirmed infections (and deaths). CDC and the other government agencies cite public data once a day or so, there’s no ticker or set schedule.

Over 2,000 now with a third case in the US (California). Needs another week or two to establish what the actual mortality rate is. You’d die from if most likely on the later end- by pneumonia or complications from pneumonia.

Suspected case as Wesleyan- but this is kind of sensational.
The "usual" winter flu presents pretty much exactly the same (scratchy throat -> fever -> cough -> pneumonia), won't know until they do lab tests.

Probably a case at Yale:
https://www.nbcconnecticut.com/news/local/model-un-event-at-yale-ends-early-after-student-gets-sick/2215121/

No idea why they would have this event right now given the virus spreading.
1800 students from 40 countries come to visit.
Yeah, definitely no chance of spreading this...

Mortality rate is still ~3%
2800+ lab-confirmed infections, 81 dead.

Was surprised to see many asians wearing masks in the Phoenix airport this past Saturday when flying back to CT. Quite a few asians with masks in the Philly airport too.

Seems these viruses always seem to come out/spread from of the asian/Chinese area.

We'll never know how bad it really is as it seems that dragging truthful information out of Chinese officials (or any Communist official for that matter) is next to impossible until the incident is beyond the containment stage and bodies start dropping in large numbers world wide.
Potentially, a government is the most dangerous threat to man's rights: it holds a legal monopoly on the use of physical force against legally disarmed victims.

Isn't the flu a kind of corona virus? It's a broad category IIRC.

Mortality rate is still ~3%
2800+ lab-confirmed infections, 81 dead.

So basically just a worse kind of flu. Much panic, not a lot of mortality.

Seems these viruses always seem to come out/spread from of the asian/Chinese area.

Just as a statistic matter more people = more likely to start there. Plus dense population results in more human-animal contact.

Coronaviruses have similar symptoms to the flu we know- respiratory infection.
Yes, panic is high because zoologic viruses like this that jump from species to species can mutate fast (and to maybe something worse).
And yes agreed on population density in China = higher probs of a virus like this jumping from species to species.
China also has medieval health inspection standards for meat processing- like NONE. And that's exactly how this and Ebola happened- contact with the bodily fluids of infected animals or got the germs inhaled from infected animals.

MERS is also a Coronavirus as well and has a 35% mortality rate. Popped up in Saudi Arabia and is suspected of jumping from camels to humans. Same type of thing, respiratory infection that presents like the flu does:
