Similar question. I am building a 10.5" other off of a recently purchased anderson lower. Can I pay the $200 for an AOW stamp and "manufacturer the AOW" myself instead of going the pin/weld route? Would engraving be required? Would I have to notify the ATF when I transport it out of state? I know that buying one already made only incurs a $5 fee for the stamp whereas what I outlined above is different. But just a hypothetical question.

Because of the barrel length being less than 12"?

I am not as familiar with the AOW rules as Henson is, but I do believe that the barrel length must be between 12 - 16 and an OAL UNDER 26" for it to qualify as an AOW.

I always look at this and sometime get more confused, lol. For the weapons people actually care about in CT, an AoW is essentially a firearm with a VFG. If the wait times weren't so damn long, I think more people would go this option. If I remember correctly, Mad started with AoW's, then the Mossy Shockwave made non NFA a better option. So it didn't take much to make a non NFA version of an AoW with the right barrel/ OAL set up.

My question for those that own them, does showing the tax stamp count for anything if a cop were to question you about the guns legality? And I assume the AoW still has to at least sport a 12.5 barrel to not be a pistol?

I did a 10.5 aero upper and it almost made the over 12 inches with the normal bird cage on there but wasn’t enough. I did the Surefire battle comp and had delta pin and weld it for me. Brought it to 12.75. Thing is very loud though.

I feel you on that. My 12.5 is a loud boi as well. Gonna put one of those brakes that directs everything forward on it.

For my 10.5 and 14.5 builds I used the Windham Weaponry extended A-2 birdcage it is around 2.75" I believe.
