Most accurate 5.56mm round?
« on: June 30, 2020, 04:44:09 PM »
So....What is everyone's favorite 5.56mm/.223 ammo for accuracy?

I was considering looking for some Black Hills Mk262 Mod1 Ammunition 5.56x45mm ammo but even if it was in stock anywhere, I'm not going to pay $1.20/round. Before I do that I will break out my Dillon 550 and work up a load.

Everyone with a dremel who thinks they are a gunsmith should have their fingers broken!

Black hills and lake city are on the way out...

MK 262 Mod1 is a round we manufacture to spec at 85c/rd.

Right now, we’re doing a custom 52gr and a custom 62gr.

Check on Arfcom - There are some decent loads over there!

Would depend on the length of barrel, twist rate, weight of projectile, and the range/distance you want to shoot. There's not really one accurate do it all round for every barrel length and twist rate.  .

24" barrel will work wonders.

This is very true. A .223 or 5.56 out of a 24” barrel is a hoot to shoot.

So you want an accurate round, but don’t want to pay $1+?
I’m confused. Goodluck.

I’ve had great results with fiocchi 223

I mean...

Twist and length are important, but any reloader worth their salt can compensate in either direction for twist/length.

Physics tells us that if we slow down the projectile's velocity it will reach the same twist rate as a faster bullet in the proper grain weight - This goes both ways.

Same is true of length...

Were this 5 years ago, it would be a different answer, but these days, there are enough custom ammunition manufacturers out there that will customize your load, it's just a question of the juice being worth the squeeze.

Years ago, I passed over an Colt A2 Sporter variant of some sort that factory had a 24” barrel. My grandfather’s Winchester Model 52 (22LR) bought new in 1932 has a 28” barrel. And it weights more than any of M1As. Hell, the standard M1A barrel is 22”.

If you want an accurate AR, start with a standard 20” upper and a full rifle stock, the best ammo will not get you all the accuracy.
