Next best after underwood?
« on: July 19, 2020, 12:52:29 PM »
Was hoping to buy some of underwoods 125gr 38 special +p (1250 fps )

They were in stock a few weeks back, should have snagged them then.

Anybody know of some other hot stuff? Buffalo bore isnt that close.

What firearm are you using?
Simply load to duplicate the Underwood data. For example, 7.0 grains of Longshot lists 1228 fps (7.7" barrel, 125g XTP, 18,300 psi). No telling what pressure Underwood loads to.
If you can chamber 357 Magnums, simply use them. If you don't want that heavy recoil, simply use starting loads. For example 6.9g of CFE Pistol lists 1340 fps and 7.3g of W231 yields 1335 fps (10" barrel); well below true magnum velocities.
Many expect 500 S&W performance out of a .380 Auto. Buy a 500 S&W, if you want that performance.

Although a much lighter bullet, Inceptor ARX 77g does 1260 fps at .38 Special pressures (<17,000 psi). No data for the +P loads, if available.

Well, I guess you'll just have to wait until the Underwood product is back in stock.
I have to wonder what load they use to get such extreme velocities compared to other +P offerings. Do they have magic powder or do they load well beyond SAAMI +P levels.
Do you have a chronograph to actually get a reading as fired from your firearm?
You can come roll some of your own, if ever up my way (North Stonington), but I am out of Longshot and most other powders. I don't have any 125g projectiles either, unless you want to try some 100g, 124g or 147g HSTs for 9mm (slightly under size @ .355" dia.).
Live-fire onsite, but no chrony.

Im not sure what powder they use but yeah its probably pixie dust. Ive seen a bunch of videos on all their stuff (to include the 38 spec) and they are normally right at advertised or just a hair over it. Usually out of a 4” barrel.

Im figuring thats right at 9mm +p velocity with pretty much identical bullet weight. Not too shabby.

FWIW, MidwayUSA has the Lehigh bullets on sale; still not cheap, but they would be interesting to load and test in various mediums.
For example:

My offer still stands...
