Yep, the Army did something similar with Atomic Annie (M65 cannon). At least the BB's could leave the area and avoid the fallout where as the M65 would take some time to break down for transport possibly exposing the crew to fallout from the atomic warhead.

Been watching other vids recently those guys on the BB-62 have done. Good stuff showing how the various guns operated.

Interesting history tidbit, but the guy's talking style and room echo gave me a headache after a minute so I stopped watching.

There was a major effort to create a nuclear artillery shell primarily to stop Soviet infantry from overrunning Europe almost immediately following the end of WW2. Tactical ballistic missles were still in their infancy in terms of guidance in the early 1950s, artillery was universal through all branches. And it was not unwarranted- in 2005, declassified ex-USSR information was made public concerning “Seven Days to The Rhine”, which was an off-the-shelf invasion plan for Europe from the late 1970s.  The idea of nuclear artillery was rendered moot as Strategic Air Command bombers, supersonic aircraft, and ballistic missle guidance were all subsequently better options.

Didn’t the Russians follow through with a nuclear warhead for their artillery?

The W48 was one of the American version. It's a 155mm artillery shell with a low yield (less than 1 KT) explosion.
